Français : Télémaque, pressé par Mentor, quitte l’île de Calypso, en se dégageant des bras de la nymphe Eucharis qui cherche à le retenir auprès d’elle, tableau présenté par l'artiste au Salon de 1800 (numéro 266 du livret) avec la précision suivante : "Dans le même instant, Calypso arrive de la chasse, accompagnée de plusieurs de ses nymphes. Elle est témoin des regrets des deux amans ; une jalousie terrible et concentrée se peint sur son visage."
Le sujet est tiré du roman de Fénelon publié en 1699, les Aventures de Télémaque, réimprimé tout au long du XVIIIème siècle (76 éditions sont parues entre 1800 et 1815). La tragédie lyrique de Deray et Lesueur de 1796, avec un duo entre les deux amants, avait encore ajouté de la popularité à ce thème. Si le jeune héros est bien un des personnages principaux de l'Odyssée d'Homère, fils modèle de Pénélope et d'Ulysse, protégeant sa mère, puis son père des prétendants, la nymphe Euscharis, servante de Calypso, est inconnue de la mythologie grecque. Elle est inventée par Fénélon qui décrit entre eux une passion fugitive, contrariée et chaste, provoquant la jalousie de sa maîtresse Calypso, amoureuse elle aussi de Télémaque. Le précepteur de celui-ci, Mentor (en fait Minerve déguisé en vieux sage), les sépare. |
